Compress PDF

Reduce file size while keeping your document readable.

Files are never stored — deleted immediately after processing.

PDF compression works by resampling embedded images and stripping metadata the reader doesn't need. Text, form fields, and links are untouched — the file opens identically in any PDF viewer, just takes up less space on disk.

Common questions

Does compressing a PDF reduce quality?
It depends on the level you choose. Low compression keeps quality close to the original. Highest compression achieves the smallest file size but reduces image sharpness noticeably.
Is there a free PDF compressor with no signup?
Yes. EmergePDF's PDF compressor is completely free with no signup, no account, and no watermarks on the output.
Are my files stored?
No. Files are never stored — they are processed and deleted immediately. We never read your documents.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
Depends on the content. Image-heavy PDFs often shrink 60–80% at highest compression. Text-only PDFs typically see 20–30% reduction — there's less image data to work with.
Will the compressed file look different on screen?
At Low compression, the difference is barely visible. At Highest, images lose some sharpness — fine for emailing, not ideal if you're going to print it.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
No. Remove the password protection first, then compress. You can re-lock it after if needed.
Does compression affect searchable text?
No. Text content and searchability are fully preserved at all compression levels. Only image resolution is affected.
What's the file size limit?
Up to 50MB per file.
